Quote of the week | Key to failure

I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

Bill Cosby

Mr. Cosby hit the nail on the head here. Focus on what you know and provide your knowledge to clients who need what you’ve got. Don’t try to be everything to everyone. I can speak volumes about this because I am tempted to do the exact opposite almost daily. I have to absolutely force myself to focus on only our core strengths. Like many other folks, I find myself wanting to dive into some new exciting venture requiring new learning and the testing of our capabilities. When that urge hits, I simply remind myself that great companies are built by focusing on a few core competencies. And I want to build great companies that are recognized as industry leaders. Once I’ve reprimanded myself, I refocus and find a productive outlet within our core competencies that satisfies my urge for excitement.

Focus leads to experience and eventually expertise. Being seen as an expert breeds a higher demand for your time and consequently a higher price point for your services. Offering too many services will detract from your ability to effectively market any of them.
