SEO Tips and Resources

We work on a variety of web development projects. Every project is different and has its own unique challenges. However, one item has become a constant: optimization. Every project we take on from blog development to e-Commerce website needs a proper optimization strategy. It’s our job to build the foundation and ensure that you have the infrastructure and overall optimization plan in place. However, it’s often up to our clients to drive the optimization strategy forward. Here are some helpful resources that shed light on SEO basics, keyword strategies, keyword research resources, keyword niches, inbound links and several other useful topics. We’re getting more and more questions about SEO, so we thought it was a good time for a post on the matter.

Three useful posts:

1. A post from Hubspot on SEO and meta-data for small businesses. The post is directed toward small businesses, but the post is a nice piece for anyone wanting to learn some SEO/meta-data basics. I find many of the Hubspot posts to be informative, and I enjoyed their book on inbound marketing. They know their SEO and do a good job of breaking it down to basics. That said, I believe they often overlook the need for, and value of, a comprehensive marketing plan.

2. Long tail keywords are next on our homework list. This post from Wordtracker does a good job of explaining long tail and then providing some examples of long tail put to use.

3. Another post from Wordtracker, this one delves into keyword niches. This is an important subject and is somewhat of an extension of the long tail discussion. Stick with it to the end.

A couple resources:

Keywordspy – Keyword research and a great browser plug-in. This is where I start all of my research before progressing on to other tools.

Market Samurai – A useful research tool that requires you to download their software. Their landing pages are ugly and some of their stuff is cheesy, but their tools are useful. I have noticed some bugs here and there, but the information is better than anywhere else I’ve found.

This is some basic information to get you started. None of these tools and resources can do the work for you, but they’ll give you a road map to follow. Just know that building up organic listings takes time, planning and dedication to a content and SEO strategy.

This is the clear and direct explanation of long tail keywords tag I’ve seen. I had a terrible time trying to get this resolved when I was first learning. I’ll keep the rest of your series with interest.
