The 1000 most-visited websites

Here’s a link to the 1000 most-visited websites according to Google. There is an interesting mix on the list, and there are definitely several surprises (at least to me). An email from the AAF brought this to my attention and I thought I’d share the list along with a few things I noticed.

A few observations:

1. Facebook is a beast with 570,000,000,000 page views. That number is pretty incredible. People are addicted to the platform and the company is constantly exploring ways to make money from their mass appeal.

2. Microsoft is still a major force. Apple and Google are the media darlings, but Microsoft is still driving traffic from around the globe to various web properties that are under the Microsoft umbrella.

3. Yahoo isn’t dead just yet. Google and Bing dominate the search engine headlines (for good reason), but Yahoo still drives huge traffic numbers. The question is whether they can better monetize that traffic.

4. The heavy presence of blogging platforms, social media and search engines give a glimpse on where everyone goes to stay up-to-date on a daily basis. Instead of hitting nytimes.com and other traditional news sites each morning, many people are shifting their attention to social media sites and blogs of all sorts.

5. Online shopping has hit its stride. There are numerous online retailers of all sorts on the list. Obviously Amazon is dominating at a global level, but there are several other retailers with very respectable numbers in the top 1000.
